DK Mode & the Cheat Menu

GoldenEye 007 · Nintendo 64 · 1997 · Unlockable

Beat listed levels under strict par times (e.g. Facility in 2:05 on 00 Agent) to unlock menu toggles

Effect: Unlocks a cheat menu with options such as invincibility, all weapons, paintball mode, and the notorious DK Mode.

Rare refused to hand players a simple button sequence. Instead, GoldenEye 007 locked its cheats behind punishing speedrun challenges — to earn invincibility you had to clear Facility in 2:05 on the hardest difficulty; other toggles demanded near-flawless runs of Dam, Aztec, and Cradle. The most infamous unlock, DK Mode, swelled every character’s head and arms to Donkey Kong proportions, an in-house joke referencing Rare’s own Donkey Kong Country pedigree. Because the time trials doubled as an eternal skill ladder, GoldenEye became one of the earliest console games with a thriving speedrun community, chasing the very targets Rare had set as cheat requirements decades before online leaderboards existed.

Key Facts:
  • Cheats are earned by beating levels under par times, not entered as codes
  • DK Mode enlarges heads and arms, referencing Rare’s Donkey Kong Country
  • The unlock times seeded one of console gaming’s first organised speedrun scenes
