Developer Story

Bionic Commando was designed by Tokuro Fujiwara at Capcom in 1987. The central innovation was removing the ability to jump — the protagonist Nathan Spencer used a bionic arm with a grappling hook to swing across gaps. This forced entirely new spatial thinking compared to conventional platformers. The game also featured in-game radio communications and a narrative about infiltrating enemy territory.

Did You Know?

  • Bionic Commando removed the ability to jump entirely — a deliberate design choice that forced players to rethink every traversal challenge.
  • The grappling arm could grab ledges, enemies, and even bullets in some cases — mastering its physics was the whole game.
  • In the Japanese version (Top Secret), the villains were explicitly Nazis and Hitler appeared as a boss — censored for Western releases.
  • The radio communication system gave the game an unusual narrative structure for a 1987 action game.
