Developer Story

The NES version of Ghouls 'n Ghosts was ported by Capcom in 1990. While technically impressive for the hardware, the NES port required compromises compared to the arcade and Mega Drive versions. The Super Nintendo version of the series, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (1991), is considered the definitive home version — using Mode 7 rotation effects and a double-jump mechanic that the series retained thereafter.

Did You Know?

  • The NES port of Ghouls 'n Ghosts was produced after the more capable Mega Drive version, making its hardware limitations more apparent.
  • Tokuro Fujiwara designed all three main Ghouls games — Ghosts 'n Goblins, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts — maintaining series consistency.
  • Arthur's boxer shorts — revealed when armour is lost — appeared in every version, becoming as iconic as the character's full-armour look.
  • Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on SNES introduced the double-jump, permanently altering the series' movement mechanics.
  • The requirement to complete the game twice for the true ending was present in every version — a Fujiwara signature across multiple Capcom titles.
