Deep Dive
Operation Wolf is a classic 1980s light gun shooter game developed by Taito for Arcade.
Developer Story
Operation Wolf was developed by Taito in 1987. Players used a mounted gun peripheral to shoot at enemies in a series of military missions, aiming to rescue hostages. The game was one of the first light gun games to use a realistic military setting and free-aim rather than screen-limited targeting. Its popularity triggered the "gallery shooter" genre boom of the late 1980s.
Did You Know?
Operation Wolf's mounted UZI gun peripheral had a recoil motor that vibrated when fired — early force feedback in an arcade context.
The game required players to rescue hostages from each area — shooting civilians reduced the hostage count and increased mission difficulty.
The ammunition management system — grenades and machine gun bullets were both limited — created resource pressure across the entire game.
Operation Wolf was one of the first games to achieve the "gun-in-hand" physical sensation that light gun games had always promised.
