Punch-Out!! is a classic 1980s boxing game developed by Nintendo for Arcade.
Developer Story
Punch-Out!! was designed by Genyo Takeda at Nintendo in 1984. The game used two stacked monitors — a small display showing the player's character at the bottom and a large display for the opponent above. This created an unusual split-screen perspective that made opponents appear large and imposing. Punch-Out!! introduced the pattern-recognition mechanic that would define boxing games: each opponent had a specific tell before attacking.
Did You Know?
Punch-Out!! used two stacked monitors — a small one for the player's character, a large one for the opponent — creating a unique split-display visual.
Each opponent had a specific tell (a facial tic, a sound cue, or a wind-up animation) that signalled their attack — pattern recognition over reflexes.
The game featured an actual heart rate monitor peripheral designed for it — though the mechanic was removed before release.
The NES version replaced the original's boxer with Little Mac and became one of the platform's most beloved games.
