Developer Story

Shinobi was developed by Sega in 1987. Players controlled Joe Musashi, a ninja rescuing kidnapped children from the criminal organisation Zeed. The game's hostage-rescue mechanic added consequence to every stage — children had to be freed before completing the level. The ninjutsu magic system provided powerful screen-clearing attacks limited by resource management. Shinobi became one of Sega's most successful arcade franchises.

Did You Know?

  • Shinobi's hostage-rescue mechanic gave every stage a secondary objective — players couldn't just survive, they had to find every captive child.
  • The ninjutsu magic was a screen-clearing power — but players had a fixed number of uses that didn't replenish, so saving them for bosses was critical.
  • The third level boss was a ninja gang leader who used his own children as hostages — a moment of moral pressure unusual in 1987.
  • The Master of Shinobi bonus rounds required throwing stars at enemies under strict time pressure — an arcade skill-challenge format.
