Deep Dive
Tempest is a classic 1980s shooter game developed by Dave Theurer for Arcade.
Developer Story
Tempest was designed by Dave Theurer at Atari in 1981 — the same designer who created Missile Command. The game was developed from a concept Theurer called "first-person Space Invaders." The distinctive tube-and-web geometry was a technical accident: the hardware could render geometric shapes efficiently but struggled with detailed sprites. Theurer turned the limitation into a feature. The spinner controller gave the game a distinctive feel that no other game replicated.
Did You Know?
Dave Theurer designed both Tempest and Missile Command — two of the most psychologically intense games of the golden age, both featuring unstoppable, escalating threats.
The game was originally designed as a first-person Space Invaders — enemies came toward the camera rather than moving sideways.
Theurer suffered from nightmares during Tempest's development, just as he had during Missile Command — the psychological intensity of the games reflected his state of mind.
The spinner controller gave extremely precise rotational movement — far more responsive than any joystick — and became integral to the game's feel.
Tempest was one of the first games to offer difficulty selection before play began, letting experienced players skip early levels.
