Developer Story

Final Fight was designed by Akira Nishitani and Akira Yasuda (Akiman) at Capcom in 1989. Originally conceived as Street Fighter '89 — a sequel to Street Fighter — the game evolved into its own IP during development. Mayor Mike Haggar, his daughter Jessica, and her boyfriend Cody fought through five Metro City districts to rescue Jessica from the Mad Gear gang. Final Fight became the definitive beat-em-up of its era.

Did You Know?

  • Final Fight was originally planned as Street Fighter '89 — it became a separate IP mid-development when the design moved away from one-on-one combat.
  • Haggar pile-driving enemies while wearing his suit became one of gaming's most iconic images — a politician who solved problems with his body.
  • The Super Nintendo port controversially removed the two-player co-op mode and a playable character — Guy was absent from the initial SNES release.
  • Poison, a female enemy in the original, became the subject of decades-long debate about her canonical gender — Capcom has given deliberately inconsistent answers.
  • Final Fight launched a series that continued through three numbered sequels and influenced every beat-em-up of the 1990s.
