Deep Dive

Gyruss is a classic 1980s shooter game developed by Konami for Arcade.

Developer Story

Gyruss was designed by Yoshiki Okamoto at Konami in 1983. Players flew a spacecraft in a circular orbit, shooting enemies that emerged from the centre of the screen. The circular movement created a distinctive "tube" visual effect. The game used Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, played on a five-channel sound system — one of the most musically sophisticated arcade games of its era.

Did You Know?

  • Gyruss used Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor as its theme, performed on a five-channel sound system extraordinary for 1983.
  • The circular player movement — rotating around the screen's edge — was a complete inversion of typical shooter movement.
  • Okamoto designed both Gyruss and Time Pilot within months of each other, establishing himself as one of Konami's most creative designers.
  • The NES port used the same distinctive musical theme, bringing Bach into millions of homes.
