Pengo is a classic 1980s puzzle / action game developed by Coreland / Sega for Arcade.

Developer Story

Pengo was developed by Coreland and published by Sega in 1982. Players controlled a penguin who could push ice blocks to crush enemies or slide them across the screen as projectiles. The game featured a memorable marching theme and was one of the first games with a jingle that played between rounds. It was a major hit in Japan.

Did You Know?

  • Pengo's sliding block mechanic created a puzzle element within an action game — players had to think about block positioning rather than just shooting.
  • The game featured three magic blocks that, when aligned, produced a powerful bonus and froze all enemies temporarily.
  • Pengo's cheerful penguin protagonist and Antarctic setting were highly unusual in the militaristic/alien-invasion landscape of 1982 arcades.
  • A musical jingle played between rounds — an early example of non-gameplay music used for atmosphere and pacing.
