Deep Dive
Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? is a classic 1980s educational game developed by Broderbund for Apple II / Multiple.
Developer Story
Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? was designed by Broderbund in 1985, conceived by Gene Portwood and Lauren Elliott. The educational adventure game required players to look up real geographical facts in an included World Almanac to track the thief Carmen Sandiego across countries. The PBS television show (1991–1996) starring Lynne Thigpen as the Chief reached millions of children. Carmen Sandiego became one of the most recognisable educational game brands in history.
Did You Know?
The game shipped with a physical World Almanac — players had to consult the real book to find geographical clues, making it a genuinely educational tool.
Carmen Sandiego was the first computer game character to have her own television show, which ran for five seasons on PBS.
The red coat and wide-brimmed hat made Carmen one of the most visually distinctive game characters of the 1980s.
Players were apprentice detectives working their way up through ranks — V.I.L.E. henchmen at first, with Carmen as the ultimate quarry.
The series expanded to history, time, Europe, and the USA, creating a franchise of educational titles that spanned decades.
