Developer Story
Castlevania was designed by Hitoshi Akamatsu at Konami in 1986. Simon Belmont's quest through Dracula's castle was structured as a series of rooms with specific enemy placements and sub-bosses leading to confrontations with classic Universal Monsters — Medusa, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Grim Reaper — before the final battle with Dracula. The sub-weapon system added variety to Simon's primary whip attack.
Did You Know?
Castlevania's enemies were drawn from Universal Monster films — Medusa, Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, and the Grim Reaper all appeared before Dracula.
The whip had a specific arc that couldn't hit enemies directly below the player — the game's most famous frustration was the medusa heads that knocked players into pits.
Candles throughout the castle hid sub-weapons and hearts — destroying them was habitual for players who mapped the game.
The staircase sections had fixed movement — players couldn't jump while climbing stairs, making them uniquely vulnerable.
Castlevania's gothic horror aesthetic, combined with action game mechanics, created a genre template that endured through 35 years of sequels.
