Deep Dive

Gauntlet is a classic 1980s dungeon crawler game developed by Ed Logg for Arcade.

Developer Story

Gauntlet was designed by Ed Logg at Atari Games in 1985. It supported up to four simultaneous players — Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, and Elf — in a dungeon-crawl adventure with a continuous supply of enemies generated by monster generators. The speech synthesiser directed players ("Elf needs food badly!") and the coin-operated mechanic of paying to restore health created a completely new business model. Gauntlet was a massive financial success.

Did You Know?

  • "Elf needs food badly!" became one of the most recognisable game voice lines of the 1980s.
  • Gauntlet was designed as a four-player game from the start — the cabinet had four sets of controls built in from day one.
  • Health decreased continuously over time, making more coins (and thus more health) a core part of the business model.
  • Monster generators could spawn enemies indefinitely — destroying them was often more important than fighting individual enemies.
  • Gauntlet earned so much revenue that some operators reported it paid for itself in days rather than the usual weeks.
