Developer Story

Ghouls 'n Ghosts was designed by Tokuro Fujiwara at Capcom in 1988 as the sequel to Ghosts 'n Goblins. The game introduced the two-layer armour system (golden armour unlocked magic attacks) and the Psycho Cannon — a screen-clearing weapon available only in the final form. Like its predecessor, completing the game once revealed it was an illusion, requiring a second playthrough for the true ending.

Did You Know?

  • Ghouls 'n Ghosts retained its predecessor's brutal mechanic: completing the game triggers a cutscene revealing it was a trick, requiring a second full playthrough.
  • The golden armour provided magic attacks but was fragile — losing it meant losing the magic system until another was found.
  • The game's music, composed by Tamayo Kawamoto, was considered one of the finest in 16-bit gaming.
  • The Mega Drive version was technically impressive and helped establish the console's "arcade-perfect port" reputation.
