Deep Dive

Gradius is a classic 1980s shooter game developed by Konami for Arcade.

Developer Story

Gradius was designed by Hiroyasu Machiguchi at Konami in 1985. The game's power-up system was its central innovation: players collected power capsules and applied them to a selection bar to choose which upgrade to apply — speed, missiles, double shot, laser, or option pods. The system required strategic planning before play even began. Gradius established Konami's most enduring shooting game series.

Did You Know?

  • The Gradius power-up selection bar was a completely new mechanic — players chose which upgrade to apply from a menu, making loadout strategy part of the game.
  • The famous "Konami Code" was invented by Gradius designer Kazuhisa Hashimoto for his own use during testing — he found the game too hard and needed a way to cheat.
  • Option pods — orbiting weapons that mirrored the player's fire — were a visual innovation that became a series trademark.
  • The Zelos Force boss — a giant demonic head — became one of the most iconic arcade boss images of 1985.
