Developer Story

Rygar was developed by Tecmo in 1986. The arcade version was a straightforward side-scrolling action game, while the NES version transformed it into an open-world adventure with RPG elements. The NES Rygar is considered one of the earliest "Metroidvania" style games — a largely non-linear world where new abilities unlocked previously inaccessible areas.

Did You Know?

  • The arcade and NES versions of Rygar are essentially different games — the NES version added open-world exploration and RPG progression the arcade never had.
  • The diskarmor weapon — a spinning shield on a chain — was one of gaming's more exotic weapons, functioning as both attack and grapple.
  • Rygar on NES had no save system — the game had to be completed in a single session or abandoned.
  • The game's non-linear world and ability-gated areas make it a direct ancestor of the Metroidvania genre, despite predating the term.
