Released during a high point in popularity for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, the arcade game was a worldwide hit, becoming the highest-grossing dedicated arcade game of 1990 in the United States and Konami's highest-grossing arcade game. Versions for various home systems soon followed, including the Nintendo Entertainment System. A sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, was released in 1991.

Developer Story

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was developed by Konami in 1989, capitalising on the cartoon series' massive popularity. The four-player simultaneous beat-em-up allowed friends to each control a different turtle — Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, or Raphael — co-operatively through seven stages. Konami produced the game at exceptional quality, with large, detailed sprites and faithful character voices.

  • TMNT allowed four simultaneous players — one per turtle — making it the definitive four-player co-op arcade experience of its era.
  • Each turtle played identically in the arcade version despite having different weapons — balance was prioritised over character distinction.
  • The game used voice clips from the animated series, making the turtles sound exactly as players expected from Saturday morning TV.
  • Pizza appeared as health restoration items throughout the game — a clever integration of the franchise's signature food obsession.
  • TMNT arcade became one of the highest-grossing arcade games of 1989, with queues at every machine during the peak of turtle mania.
