Deep Dive

Archon is a classic 1980s strategy game developed by Free Fall Associates for Atari 8-bit / Apple II.

Developer Story

Archon was designed by Jon Freeman, Anne Westfall, and Paul Reiche III at Free Fall Associates and published by Electronic Arts in 1983. The game combined chess-like strategic movement on a board with real-time arcade combat in a separate arena when pieces met. The blend of strategy and action was genuinely original. Free Fall Associates had previously made Temple of Apshai; Paul Reiche III later co-created the Skylanders franchise.

Did You Know?

  • Archon combined chess strategy (movement on a board) with arcade action (real-time combat when pieces fought) — a hybrid genre that has almost never been successfully replicated.
  • The power points on the board changed colour over time, shifting which side had advantage in combat on each square.
  • The Shapeshifter piece could transform into any captured piece — a tactical wildcard that added depth to the strategy layer.
  • Electronic Arts used Archon in early promotional materials as evidence that games could be art — it appeared alongside musicians and filmmakers in their first ads.
