Deep Dive

Mega Man 3 is a classic 1980s platform / action game developed by Capcom for NES.

Developer Story

Mega Man 3 was designed by Yoshinori Takamatsu at Capcom in 1989. The game introduced Rush, Mega Man's robotic dog companion who could transform into a springboard, a submarine, and a jet. Eight new Robot Masters were joined by the returns of all eight from Mega Man 2, accessible via Doc Robot stages. The game was the first in the series where Proto Man appeared as a recurring ambiguous ally.

Did You Know?

  • Rush the robotic dog introduced a transforming companion that could become a springboard, submarine, or jet — the mechanical pet concept proved enduringly popular.
  • Doc Robot stages required players to defeat all eight Robot Masters from Mega Man 2 again, using only the abilities from Mega Man 3's bosses.
  • Proto Man appeared as a mysterious recurring character — his identity and motivation were deliberately kept ambiguous throughout the game.
  • The game's development was rushed due to time pressure — Capcom later acknowledged that Mega Man 3 needed more polish before release.
