Deep Dive

Pole Position is a classic 1980s racing game developed by Namco for Arcade.

Developer Story

Pole Position was developed by Namco in 1982 and brought genuine racing game immersion to arcades. Players drove in a third-person perspective behind the car — unprecedented in arcade racing. The game included a qualifying lap, a grid start, and an actual race against computer opponents on a real circuit (Fuji Speedway). It became one of the highest-grossing arcade games of 1982 and established the modern racing game template.

Did You Know?

  • Pole Position was based on Fuji Speedway — one of the first arcade games to use a real-world circuit.
  • The behind-the-car perspective was new to racing games, creating a sense of speed and immersion that top-down games couldn't match.
  • A qualifying lap determined starting grid position — a faithful recreation of real Formula One procedure.
  • The game's sprite-scaling technique (enlarging car sprites as they approached) created convincing 3D depth using 2D graphics.
  • Pole Position was the highest-grossing arcade game in the US in 1983, beating Pac-Man and Donkey Kong.
