Dig Dug is a classic 1980s action game developed by Namco for Arcade.

Developer Story

Dig Dug was designed by Masanobu Endoh at Namco in 1982, the same designer who created Xevious. The game mechanic — pumping enemies to inflate and pop them, or dropping rocks on them — was unique. The underground landscape the player carved out persisted through the level, creating a dynamic environment. Dig Dug became one of Namco's most successful arcade games.

Did You Know?

  • The pump mechanic — inflating enemies until they explode — was entirely original and has never been convincingly replicated in another game.
  • Fygar the dragon could breathe fire horizontally, but only if the player was on the same level — vertical positioning provided safety.
  • Dropping a rock on multiple enemies scored escalating bonus points — risk-reward planning was built into every level.
  • The underground map was entirely carved by the player — no two playthroughs looked the same.
