Deep Dive

Space Harrier is a classic 1980s rail shooter game developed by Yu Suzuki for Arcade.

Developer Story

Space Harrier was designed by Yu Suzuki at Sega in 1985. Suzuki used Sega's Super Scaler hardware — which could scale sprites rapidly to simulate 3D movement — to create a pseudo-3D rail shooter that ran at a smooth framerate. The sensation of flying at high speed through a fantastic landscape was unlike anything in arcades before it. Suzuki followed Space Harrier with OutRun and After Burner, creating a trilogy of Sega 'super-scaler' spectaculars.

Did You Know?

  • Space Harrier used Sega's Super Scaler hardware to enlarge sprites rapidly, creating the illusion of moving through 3D space at high speed.
  • The sit-down cabinet featured a moving seat that tilted and vibrated in sync with on-screen action — early force feedback.
  • Yu Suzuki designed Space Harrier, OutRun, and After Burner in consecutive years, establishing Sega's reputation for arcade spectacle.
  • The Harrier's flight was a direct reference to the jet suit from the James Bond film Thunderball.
